"Never give up, never give in. Have courage to move on!"
Prince Siddhartha, when he decided to leave the Palace to lead an ascetic's life, was absolutely determined. Some called it irresponsibility, I think it is determination.
He wondered several years learning from great teachers but he still could not find what he was looking for until he found Alara Kalama and Udakkha Ramaputta.
Both were regarded as the best teachers at that time.
Siddhartha learnt everything from them and He was even offered to take over and be the the next teachers. But Siddhartha felt it was incomplete and decided to take leave of them.
He was not swayed by position and the comfortable life.Siddhartha then thought that the way to discover what he was looking for was by way of self-mortification. He tortured himself to badly and he almost died (read Life of the Buddha for details). He then decided that that was not the way.
He felt there should be a middle way. By then, his closest friends left Him thinking that he abandoned His practise. He was left alone. He did not give up. He did not follow his friends. He did what he felt was right! All alone if He needed to!
Sometimes in our lives, we face challenges that we along must face. Very often we find short-cuts and go with the masses (or friends and somwetimes loved once), against what we feel deep down that something not right needs to be made right.
The Buddha inspires me with the strength and courage to walk a path with determination and not be afraid to change paths if we need to.May you find inspiration from the Buddha and may you have the strength to change!
